When it comes to helping someone I love, I cannot control how another person seeks healing. So, I will be sharing the journey through the eyes of the one who loves and sees and keeps trying, the one who grows tired but still can look out over the soil of a relationship and dream about seeds.
I find it striking that Psalm 88 includes virtually no words of reassurance. Nowhere does the psalmist add parenthetically, “But you are the Lord of mercy and compassion,” or anything else like this. Most psalms of lament include words of hope. Not Psalm 88. Here we find dark despair.
The psalmist pleads with God. He brings his light and truth through his Word and his presence, which are the best way out of depression.
Where is God in depression? David begins, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” Then he chooses trust.
